Assessment

At ISP, learning is viewed as a continuous journey, where teachers identify students’ needs and use assessment data to plan the next stage of their learning.

Assessment constitutes an integral part of the curriculum in the PYP,the means by which we analyse what the students have learnt and whether or not the subject teaching was effective;constituting a base for future planning.
The purposes of assessment are to:

  • Promote student learning.
  • Provide information about student learning.
  • Contribute to the successful implementation of the programme.

Teachers need to select assessment strategies and design assessment instruments to reflect clearly the particular learning outcomes on which they intend to report. They need to employ a range of strategies for assessing student work. That takes into account the diverse, complicated and sophisticated ways that individual students use to understand their experiences.

The classroom teacher evaluates the students' work both on a daily basis and after the completion of each Unit of Inquiry. Summative assessments are developed for each unit of inquiry, and formative assessments and pre-assessments on the PYP planning document. Students should receive feedback “not as a reward or punishment, but as information”. Very important is also student and teacher self-assessment and reflection.
